2009 Illinois – WUN International Development Grant Program Request for Proposals

The Division of International Programs and Studies (IPS) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Illinois) and the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN) are pleased to announce the 2009 Illinois – WUN International Development Grant Program. The Illinois – WUN International Development Grant Program is designed to strengthen interdisciplinary research on and curriculum development in global themes at Illinois and WUN partner institutions and enhance international scholarly collaboration among partner institutions. These grants are generously sponsored by the Offices of the Provost and IPS at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and the Worldwide Universities Network.

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is one of the founding members of the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN), an international alliance of leading higher-education institutions. WUN builds on its partners’ commitment to research quality and innovation in order to develop collaborations in interdisciplinary areas of global significance. WUN provides support for research networking and collaboration; graduate student and faculty exchanges; and graduate-level education initiatives and distributed learning. The WUN member universities are:

University of Alberta, University of Bergen, University of Bristol, University of California, San Diego, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, University of Leeds, Nanjing University, Pennsylvania State University, University of Sheffield, University of Southampton, University of Sydney, University of Washington, Seattle, University of Western Australia, University of Wisconsin, Madison, University of York, Zhejiang University

International Development Grant
Individuals and groups are invited to submit proposals indicating their interest in developing new or expanded initiatives that take advantage of Illinois’ membership in the WUN partnership. Proposals should be submitted following the applications guidelines below by May 1, 2009. Selections will be made by June 19, 2009. Grant activities are expected to be completed within 12 months of the award.

Through this grant program, International Programs and Studies and the WUN seek to engage Illinois faculty in new international collaborations involving, but not exclusive to, other members of the WUN partnership. The goals of the grant program are opening up novel areas of research, deepening collaborative partnerships, and attracting external support for research endeavors by leveraging WUN as a sustained and effective platform for international collaboration. Proposals are invited from Illinois faculty wishing to develop new or expanded initiatives in any areas, but applications from those in the arts, humanities and social sciences are particularly welcome. We also strongly encourage proposals that are inter-disciplinary in nature, involving multiple departments.

Up to four Individual Development Grants of up to $15,000 each will be awarded. Individual Illinois faculty members, or groups of faculty, may apply for Development Grants, which must involve collaboration with no less than two WUN partner institutions, of which Illinois can be counted as one. Additionally, at least one of the partner institutions must be international, though not necessarily a WUN member. There is no fixed format for WUN development projects, which may include exploratory research initiatives, international conferences, targeted workshops or exchange programs, and the formation of collaborative networks. Proposals drawing creatively on collaborative opportunities and indicating clear potential to secure external funding will be given top priority. Additionally, proposals which lay a strong foundation for continued long-term collaborations/initiatives extending past the grant period will be favored.

Proposals will be evaluated by a review committee appointed by the Associate Provost for International Affairs at Illinois. Final award decisions will be made in consultation with the WUN. In evaluating proposals, the review committee will consider such factors as the:
  • Extent to which the initiative will deepen collaborative relationships and competencies within the WUN partnership
  • Extent to which collaboration adds value to campus activities at Illinois
  • Potential for collaborative relationships to evolve on a self-sustaining basis
  • Involvement of faculty (both junior and senior) and students
  • Presence of Illinois or WUN partner matching support, financial or in kind or other external financial subsidies
The highest priority in all cases will be the project’s capacity to initiate, deepen, or sustain collaborative relations while leveraging external support.
